Standardizing Network Equipment Across Locations
Every unique snowflake switch stack at a branch doubles training time and spare parts cost. Standardization is not about banning all variation — it is about making the common case boring so support can focus on real exceptions.
Pick a baseline stack
Define approved models for gateway, firewall, switch, and AP roles by site size tier. Document which SKUs are interchangeable and which require project-specific engineering — fiber handoff, PoE budget, or fixed wireless instead of wired ISP.
Config templates and golden images
Store baseline configs with site-specific variables (VLAN IDs, SSID names, SNMP location strings) separated from core policy. New sites should inherit security posture automatically rather than copying the last install from memory.
Spares pool and RMA path
Keep one spare AP and one spare switch matched to your most common tier — or centralize spares at a hub with next-day ship SLA. Pair hardware with the shop catalog and Help Center PDFs so replacements are plug-in, not research projects.
