Structured Cabling: What Done Right Looks Like on Day One
Wireless gets attention; copper and fiber determine whether everything upstream performs. A clean cabling plant reduces troubleshooting time for years and makes AP, camera, and desk moves straightforward instead of archaeological.
Match cable grade to the job
Cat6 or Cat6A serves most access points, cameras, and desktop drops at 1 Gbps with headroom. Fiber belongs in backbone runs, between buildings, and anywhere distance or EMI exceeds copper limits. Document media type on the port label — color alone is not a spec.
Test and certify before closeout
Continuity checks catch gross faults; certification reports prove pairs meet spec under load. Store PDF results with the site record. When a port flaps six months later, you will know whether the install or a later change caused it.
Leave service loops and logical paths
Pull tension, bend radius, and shared pathways with power matter. Leave manageable service loops in telecom rooms. Future-you will thank present-you when swapping a switch does not require re-terminating thirty drops.
