Planning Business Wi‑Fi for Capacity, Not Just Coverage
Wireless problems are often blamed on dead zones, but capacity limits show up even when coverage maps look fine. Dozens of laptops, phones, scanners, and IoT clients sharing one radio will stall long before the signal bar drops to zero. Effective design separates who connects from how much airtime they need at peak.
Define device classes first
List corporate clients, voice handsets, printers, cameras, guest devices, and operational gear before picking AP models. Each class carries different security, bandwidth, and uptime requirements. Staff and guest networks should live on separate VLANs with explicit firewall policy so a guest surge never touches production systems.
Design for density in work areas
In spaces where people stay seated for hours, target overlapping coverage near -65 dBm rather than -75 dBm at the cell edge. Open offices and meeting rooms often need more APs than a one-per-floor layout suggests. Mount height matters: too high increases floor bleed; too low shadows desks and shelves.
Treat the wired path as part of Wi‑Fi
Every AP depends on a stable switch port, PoE budget, and cable run. Label patch panels during install and verify link speed at the port. Many Wi‑Fi bugs are marginal cabling or an oversubscribed uplink in disguise.
