How to Read a Wireless Site Survey Without Chasing Green Pixels
Survey PDFs arrive full of color gradients that impress in proposals and confuse in operations. A heat map shows predicted or measured signal — not application performance, client capability, or switch uplink headroom. Reading surveys well prevents buying hardware that looks right on paper and wrong in production.
Signal strength vs. signal quality
RSSI alone misleads. Compare SNR where the tool provides it; high RSSI with high noise still yields retries and latency. Note band: 2.4 GHz penetrates walls but contends with neighbors; 5 GHz and 6 GHz offer capacity when clients support them and AP density is sufficient.
Identify interference sources
Non-Wi‑Fi interferers — microwave ovens, certain LED drivers, legacy cordless gear — do not always appear as co-channel APs. Walk the floor with spectrum awareness when persistent retries show up in one zone despite good RSSI on paper.
When backhaul is the bottleneck
Adding APs without uplink capacity creates fast Wi‑Fi to a congested switch port. Check whether the remedy is radio density, a faster uplink, or moving high-bandwidth clients to wired drops. Surveys that ignore the wired plant tell half the story.
